Water sources
Access to clean drinking water is one of the most valuable resources for residents and businesses. It is unique on a global scale for a capital region to have access to clean drinking water that requires little or no treatment.
Most of us take clean drinking water for granted as a part of daily life. Lack of access to clean water can have serious consequences, and it is therefore unacceptable that the safety of drinking water is threatened.
Sustainable use of water resources means that future generations will have the same opportunities as current generations to utilize them and that it can be confirmed that this is being done. Due to the responsibility entrusted to the company, Reykjavík Energy will protect the water resources from dangers and encroachment, but the operation of water utilities is in the hands of Veitur, a subsidiary of Reykjavík Energy.
The oldest water sources of Reykjavík Energy are Gvendarbrunnar in Heiðmörk. Water was first supplied from there to Reykjavík in 1909, and Gvendarbrunnar still serves the city's residents. Today, almost the entire capital region gets its drinking water from water sources in Heiðmörk.
Water Conservation
The aquifers from which Veitur sources its water are in a water protection area, and it is very important that we all exercise caution when in their vicinity. The main danger is contamination of the areas, for example, with rubbish, oil, sewage, or other substances, as these can seep through the soil layers and into the water that flows underground into the aquifers.
In the capital region, our water sources are in Heiðmörk. The water protection area in Heiðmörk is very extensive, covering about 250 square kilometers. It is important that everyone passing through the water protection area understands the importance of treating it with care and reporting immediately if they notice anything they believe could contaminate the water.
